DepEd to hold reading, writing seminar for teachers

The Bureau of Secondary Education will conduct a five-day training program that will build the capacity of schools to adopt a system-wide approach to reading and writing skills development.

This program is devised to meet the needs in strengthening reading and writing as tools for learning. Skills for such need to be strengthened to effect the desired changes in student performance in terms of improved comprehension and communication skills in both oral and written language.

According to Education Undersecretary Ramon Bacani, poor reading comprehension results in the poor performance of students in English, Math and Science as shown in the 2005 National Achievement Test.

At least five schools will be attending the said training program in Iloilo City this May 1-5 for the purpose of modeling and can serve as the lead schools in the division in reading and writing.

These schools are the Cebu City National Science High School, Pamplona National High School in Negros, Talisay National High School in Talisay City, Cabungahan National High School in Danao and Bais Science High School in Bais City.

Participants from each of the identified schools will be composed of the principal and teachers majoring either in English, Math or Science including other DepEd officials. - Jasmin R. Uy
