Mandaue City set to require buildings to have a reservoir

Those who want to construct a building in Mandaue City will soon be required to include a reservoir in the building plans as a necessary component before such plans would find approval.

This after Mandaue City councilor Jonas Cortes proposed a measure that will require such to save rainwater.

The ordinance, which was approved on first reading during the city council's regular session last Tuesday, stated that the size and capacity of the reservoir must be proportionate to the size of the building to be constructed and the expected volume of rainwater that shall be collected from the rain gutters.

The ordinance read that the urgent call for the conservation of water continues to seek a more aggressive response from all citizens because of the threatening water shortages for industrial and human utilization.

Further, it stated that despite an impending water crisis, many people have continued to disregard the call of water conservation to anticipate a more serious water scarcity.

"People just let rainwater pour, pass through rain gutters and flood to the sea. It is wise to catch and collect rainwater and store the same in a separate reservoir for multiple utilization," the resolution read. - Mitchelle P. Calipayan
