Tomas Lao, 20 years old, was sitting at a bench near a chapel and talking with his friends when a man identified only as Julius of barangay Tabok, Danao City, arrived on a motorcycle, approached him and shot him in the upper abdomen and back for no reason.
Lao's friends all scampered away at the sight of his blood as the assailant immediately got back on his parked motorcycle and fled.
The victim was immediately brought to Danao District hospital but was later transferred to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center where he died a few minutes after his arrival.
SPO1 Jose Relampagos of Danao police said that they are considering a revenge angle behind the incident because last year the victim was accused of shooting an alleged "hitman" of rival fraternity, Tau Gamma Phi, also in Danao City.
Relampagos said that although Lao's alleged victim survived the shooting they believe it warranted enough hatred for revenge.
Police are now conducting a manhunt operation against the assailant. - Flor Z. Perolina
