Man arrested for double murder

- Flor Z. Perolina -
The Dumanjug Police arrested yesterday morning a man wanted for the alleged murder of a Moalboal policeman and a volleyball player last year.

Roland Fuentes, 28, of barangay Apo, Argao town was arrested yesterday morning in barangay Banilad, Cebu City after the Dumanjug Police received information that he is in the city. SPO4 Juan Casipong of the Dumanjug Police said that the suspect was among a group of eight responsible for the killing last May 15, 2004 of PO3 Agapito Aranas, a policeman assigned in Moalboal but was a resident of barangay Ylaya, Dumanjug town.

Casipong said that the policeman was allegedly shot five times by the group of Fuentes while attending a fiesta in barangay Kabalaasnan, Dumanjug, 12 kilometers away from the town proper. While Aranas was enjoying the celebration, a heated argument ensued between two residents of the place, prompting him to respond to the alarm to pacify.

But when the policeman was walking his way back home, several bursts of gunfire were heard. Residents then found Aranas sprawled on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the hospital, but died on the way. Later on, two witnesses of the shooting incident surfaced and pointed at the group of Fuentes as perpetrator.

Five of his companions were already arrested earlier, while Aranas was only arrested yesterday as he had been hiding here in the city after the incident. Fuentes and his group are reportedly responsible too for the killing, also in 2004, of a man who was playing beach volleyball in barangay Sayaw, Argao town.

Casipong said a player hit one member of the group with the ball. When the man came to get the ball from them, he was instead shot to death. Fuentes is now detained at the Dumanjug police station.
