"Visayas Republic" impossible - Dakay

-
The creation of a Visayas Republic is an impossible move by the Visayas leaders according to Cebu Archdiocese spokesman Msgr. Achilles Dakay.

Dakay said that they have not yet discussed the matter with Cebu Archbishop Cardinal Vidal but said that the Cebu archdiocese would surely oppose to the idea of creating two other republics out of the Philippines.

"We are one as a republic and one as a nation, why create another republic?" Dakay said.

He added that this is just an impossible dream of the Visayas leaders as the attempt will have undergo a tedious process before it would happen.

" They are just having an impossible dream, it is just like creating a Cebu Island out of the Pacific,' he said.

Earlier, thirteen out of 16 governors in the three regions of the Visayas took the first step in creating the Visayas republic, preparatory to the event that President Gloria Arroyo might be ousted unconstitutionally.

The governors gathered at the Waterfront Hotel on Thursday and formed two technical working committees to study the political framework and the possible constitution of the Visayas republic.

Designated heads are Negros Oriental Governor George Arnaiz and former Cebu governor Pablo Garcia with Siquijor Governor Orlando Phua, Eastern Samar Governor Ben Evardone and Mayor Gerry Espina of Naval, Biliran, as members.

A separate committee was also formed, with Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia as head to work with the chairmen of the Regional Development Councils in Regions VI, VII and VIII.
