Mandaue brgy execs told to help enforce solid waste law

- Jose P. Sollano -
The Mandaue City council is asking for the cooperation of barangay captains and officials in the implementation of the solid waste management law.

A resolution passed by the city council requests barangay captains to construct a depository area for non-biodegradable wastes after the process of segregation in their respected barangays as mandated by law.

Vice Mayor Amadeo Seno, Jr. and members of the city council said that Republic Act 9003 provides that biodegradable wastes should first be segregated from non-biodegradable wastes before these would be collected.

The law says that non-biodegradable wastes should be thrown and deposited in a specific place in the barangay.

Each barangay should have its own depository for non-biodegradable wastes. With these requirements, there is a need for the establishment of a Materials Recovery Facility.

Earlier, Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano said he will tap all sectors for the success in the implementation of the solid waste management law.

The city had recently purchased a garbage compactor worth P31 million.
