Rev. Fr. Julian Hernando, S.J. celebrates his 50th year as a Priest

CEBU, Philippines – Eighty-one years ago, one of the pillars of the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit community was born in a place called San Millan de Juarros, a province of Guipuzcoa in Javier Navarra, Burgos Spain. He received his Jesuit calling at the very young age of 13. By the time he turned 17 in 1945, he was already in the Novitiate of Loyola.

He originally came to Asia to be a missionary in China. Instead he was assigned in Taiwan for 10 years and spent 1 year in Japan. As fate would have it, he finally made his way to the Philippines and in May of 1971 stepped into Sacred Heart School where he would spend the next 38 years in various positions such as Head of the Religion Department, Chinese Coordinator, Guidance Counselor and Campus Minister. As a former soccer player he, too became soccer coach. At present, he is the School Treasurer and the Director of Athletics. Adding more to that is his role as the chairman of the Finance Committee for the new campus “The School of our Dreams,” where he assumes a big responsibility.

Last April 5 marked a significant event for Sacred Heart School-Jesuit as Rev. Fr. Julian Hernando, S.J. celebrated his Golden Year as a Jesuit priest. Despite the years, he is still full of vitality and is able to shower everyone with profound inspiration. Having come this far, he smilingly acknowledges that he has no regrets.

He is a man of many talents. A man with immeasurable commitment and dedication to serve. Truly, a humble servant leader — a Great Hero in our Midst.

Indeed, this Jesuit priest has proven himself to be truly a “Man for Others.”

Congratulations and more power!
