Sulagma

"Sulagma" is a Cebuano term which means "by chance." That was how eight gifted artists came together to eventually form the art group by that name. The Sulagma Art Group is composed of eight BS Fine Arts students from the University of the Philippines-Cebu. They were drawn together, as fate would have it, by their shared passion for artistic expression.

Last July 26, 2006, in the SM City Art Center, Sulagma formally opened its first exhibit as an art group. This self-titled debut showcases over thirty contemporary paintings and art pieces of oil on canvas, acrylic, oil on wood and other mixed media.

Kenichi Wani, one of the artists, shares: "Instead of the traditional art, which is what is seen in most exhibits, we're presenting modern art. Also, you practically never see student artist exhibits around. So with this, we hope to encourage other students to come and show their talent. They shouldn't be hesitant to share their work. Students' art can be just as amazing as that of the professionals."

In his opening remarks, Prof. Dennis Montera of UP-Cebu commended the gutsy leap of faith that the students took to carry out the premiere event. He said that their works show much maturity and promise.

The Sulagma exhibit is open to the public at the SM City Art Center, 2nd Level, until August 8, 2006.
