EDM artist Jace Roque rebrands as P-pop singer

EDM artist Jace Roque rebrands himself as a P-Pop artist, believing that doing so will make his music in the EDM genre more acceptable to music lovers.

“EDM music is more prevalent in the P-Pop music scene so my songs would be more easily digestible now if I package myself as a P-Pop artist,” said the singer in a recent Zoom interview.

He had been introducing EDM music and P-Pop for the last five years. “We are saying that Pilipino music is comparable to songs which are popular abroad. Through P-Pop, it is easier to explain this music genre because EDM music is already integrated in P-Pop.”

His rebranding, Jace said, was also spurred by his desire to help make OPM popular to a larger audience. “The visuals you see of me now is part of my rebranding. I was the one who thought of how I would like,” he said. “I was the one who thought of the concept and was not influenced by anyone. It is my personal reflection as an artist.”

Even his own songs were inspired by his own experiences. “I don’t write what ifs. The inspiration for the songs, whether happy or sad, come from a place of happiness and sadness. Hugot songs from real life.”

He doesn’t believe in writing a song inspired by something fictitious. “It should come from real emotions, with the hope that listeners can learn a thing or two, or improve their lives from the feelings expressed in the songs.”

One of his successful compositions was titled “Be Someone” which tells about struggling with one’s identity. Coming close to that is his new single titled “Trust” which he composed after discovering that his girlfriend had cheated on him.

“I slept crying and woke up crying when I discovered that. Being brokenhearted can have a strong effect on a person’s being, including his physical and mental health. This was the reason why I took a break from my music last year,” said Jace.

While he has gone over the hump, he is not yet ready to fall in love. He is not ready yet to experience pain in his heart and to be vulnerable again. His walls are still up.

“I am dedicating the ‘Trust’ song to the one who broke my heart. I hope she regrets what she had done to me and has learned something rom the pain she had caused me,” he shared.

“I hope that a person understands that if they can’t be faithful to the person they love, then don’t enter into a relationship. Being cheated by someone can be a life-long trauma. It takes time to recover from it.”

Jace is preparing for his mini-album titled “Inferno” to be released in December. This will include enhanced versions of “Trust”, “Be Someone” and “Di Para Sa ‘Yo.” His new single “Trust” was released by Ditto Music Philippines on August 12.

Next to Cinemalaya and Q Cinema, the first year of the SineHalaga Film Festival (shorts) was hailed by critics and members of the media as the third best film festival in the country.

Each short film entry to the festival should espouse the core values that are deemed important to Filipinos based on research. Some of these values include love for family, the importance of education, strong faith, and being healthy, just to name a few.

According to film director Elvert Banares, festival director of the second SineHalaga Festival, all entries will be shown in different schools all over the country, not just the short films which were selected from the first SineHalaga Film Festival.

The festival has two divisions – one for adults that is open to all amateur and professional directors, and one for students who are currently enrolled.

The short film entry for the Adult Category should be no longer than 15 minutes maximum including opening and closing credits while the short film entry for students should run for 10, including the opening and closing credits.

Eight finalists will be chosen per category. There will be top three winners in each category.

Category A (Adult Filmmakers) 3 top winners will receive 100,000 each and a Halagahan Trophy, while the five finalists will receive 20,000 each and a Sine Halaga Certificate. Category B (Students) 3 top winners will receive 50,000 each and Sine Halaga Certificate, while the 5 finalists will receive 10,000 each and a Sine Halaga Certificate.

The Zig Dulay film titled “Black Rainbow,” which won Best Short Film at the recently concluded Cinemalaya, was one of the entries in last year’s SineHalaga Festival.

The deadline of submission for entries for both categories is midnight of September 30.
