French film fest unreels at Marco Polo Plaza

CEBU, Philippines - Experience the wonderful world of French cinema at the Marco Polo Plaza as it launches Itineraire Cinematogra-phique, a two-week French Film Festival, in cooperation with the Alliance Francaise of Cebu. Now ongoing until Nov. 30, 2009, catch these remarkable French films while dining al fresco at the hotel’s El Viento Restaurant & Pool Bar from 7pm to 9pm.

November 21: LES CHORISTES, 2004

Drama

On 15 January 1949, the former music teacher Clément Mathieu arrives in “Fond de l’ Etang” (“Bottom of the Well”), a boarding school for orphans and problematic boys. Clément decides to teach the boys to sing in a choir in their spare time, and his methods change the lives of the boys, the employees and his own.

November 22: KIRIKOU ET LA SORCIÈRE, 2000

In a little village somewhere in Africa, a boy named Kirikou is born. He’s not a normal boy; he already can speak and walk. His mother tells him how an evil sorceress has dried up their spring and devoured all males of the village except one. Little Kirikou decides he will accompany the last warrior to the sorceress. And he may be the last hope of the village.

November 23: ENTRE LES MURS, 2008

Teacher François Marin and his colleagues are preparing for another school year teaching at a racially mixed inner city high school in Paris. The teachers collectively want to inspire their students, but each teacher is an individual who will do things in his or her own way to achieve the results they desire. Marin tries to get through to his students, sometimes with success and sometimes resulting in failure. Even Marin has his breaking point, which may result in him doing things he would probably admit to himself as wrong.

The pediatrician Alexandre Beck misses his beloved wife Margot Beck, who was brutally murdered and he became prime suspect. When two bodies are found near where the corpse of Margot was dumped, the police reopen the case and Alex becomes a suspect again. The mystery increases when Alex receives an e-mail showing Margot older and alive.

It has never bothered him before, but the stranger sows the first seed of doubt in his head.

November 28: BIENVENUE CHEZ LES CHTIS, 2008

Comedy

Philippe is banished to unheard-of town Bergues, in the Far North of France. Leaving his child and wife behind, the crucified man leaves for his frightening destination inhabited by hard-drinking, unemployed rednecks, speaking an incomprehensible dialect called Ch’ti. But Philippe soon realizes that Bergues is not synonymous with hell.
