CEBU, Philippines — Universal bank, BDO Unibank has pioneered the introduction of sustainable credit cards in the Philippines, made entirely from 100 percent recycled plastic.

This was introduced by the team of BDO Unibank officials led by Ma. Nannette Regala, senior vice president and Consumer Banking Group Marketing Head during the re-introduction of BDO ShopMore Mastercard in Cebu.

In an interview with Regala, she said that the first BDO green credit card is an initiative that aligns with the bank’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly products and services.

The Sy-led financial institution emphasized its responsibility to integrate sustainability principles in itsdecision-making and business operations.

“As we continue with our sustainability journey, we will continue finding ways to go green, lessen our impact on the planet, and offer choices that will help our clients do the same,”Regala said.

Using recycled plastic to manufacture BDO ShopMoreMastercard is a sustainable solution to lowering energy consumption and plastic waste. By repurposing plastic waste from packaging and printing industries instead of using brand-new PVC material, BDO reduces its environmental impact by lessening the demand for new plastic production.

Meanwhile, as Filipinos’ also recognized the importance of using credit cards, especially for the young generation, Regalaurged users to be responsible in their credit spending, establishing a good credit standing.

“With young people now with so many wants, you have to make sure that early on in your careers or work life, when you are accountable for credit card, you keep your credit card in good standing because anything that goes wrong with it is in your record,” she noted.

“If you want to have loans later on, like housing or auto loans, you’ve got to make sure you are responsible and spend within your means,” added Regala.

BDO ShopMore Mastercard was recently re-introduced to the Cebuano market at SM Seaside City, in line with the card’s 20th anniversary.

Regala also reminded credit card holders, particularly the young professionals to “pay responsibly”, meaning while banks are now offering attractive payment terms, it is prudent to pay the entire credit amount at due date, rather than paying only the minimum bill.

“Pay for more than the minimum. If your bonus comes, pay even more. So that, you get rid of the balance right away,” she advised.

She noted however, that young consumers now who use credit cards are mostly responsible, as they are aware of the importance to have a good credit standing.

She said credit cards can be a valuable tool for young adults to establish credit and build a strong financial foundation.
