Biz leaders vow to work with new government officials

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu business community is looking to work with new government leaders especially in further boosting the province's economy, following the midterm election that was marred by public criticisms over corruption-linked politicians elected anew to public office.

Sought for his comment yesterday, Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Virgilio Espeleta said the chamber remains an "apolitical" business group and it's willing to work with any government official.

"While the CCCI strongly adheres to its nature of being an apolitical business membership organization, the chamber is willing to be the instrument that coalesces and unites all political parties with a common agenda that will benefit the economy and the people of Cebu," Espeleta told The FREEMAN in his official statement.

Based on latest results, Vice Mayor Edgar Labella has won the mayoralty race in Cebu City against incumbent Mayor Tomas Osmeña. While Gwendolyn Garcia emerged as the winner in the gubernatorial race against incumbent Vice Governor Agnes Magpale.

Espeleta said CCCI "will continue to support initiatives that connect opportunities, grow businesses and create value consistent with the concerns, welfare, and developmental objectives of the business community of Cebu."

"We eagerly welcome LGU (local government units) leaders, government agencies and other stakeholders to work hand in hand to improve Cebu’s attractiveness and global competitiveness, as we look forward to working with its new leaders," Espeleta said.

Many netizens took to social media to express their dismay over the results of the midterm elections. Many criticized the election anew of corruption-linked politicians to public office.

Meanwhile, Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice president Steven Yu said the chamber remains "neutral and independent from political developments arising from the recent elections."

In an earlier statement, MCCI recognized the contributions of Mandaue City mayor-elect Jonas Crates and incumbent Mayor Luigi Quisumbing to the city’s business sector in Mandaue City.

The chamber said it sought for the election of leaders "who will remain rooted in the values of integrity, good governance and commitment to the greater and common good to achieve real development for Mandaue."

"These two leaders have, during their respective administrations, worked closely with Mandaue Chamber in its various projects and programs," the statement added.

MCCI is composed of more than 400 companies from micro to big corporations.
