Building our nation again!

BUSINESS AFTER BUSINESS - Girlie Garces - The Freeman

It seems like our political scenario is slowly taking a step towards maturity.  By that I mean, people are now aware of the importance to give voice to concerns that are build our nation.  Programs and projects that truly address the need of our people for  basic social services like water, food, shelter, clothing, and the right to be safe.

By safety, I mean both the security of knowing that our armed forces have the capacity to defend us if we are seriously invaded.  And a social security system that works and does not leave us begging for foundations to take on our medical needs, no matter how basic when we retire, or even when someone needs medical support at any point in our lives.

I do not want to compare the way we are with other countries but I cannot help being covetous of their social security system.  Their pharmacies even call them to pick up their prescriptions if they have been given one by their doctors,  And the medicines are free.

Oh yes, the trade-off is that their taxes also take on a high price.  But who cares, as long as the money we earn is respected by those who we elected and applied to our evident needs.

Roads and bridges, farm to market facilities that could improve the lives of communities and make families stay where they are as money flows with the moving economy.

It is sad to see that the lure of more jobs bring urban migration to a deplorable hilt, more and more people compete for space.  Informal settlers battle daily with the private sector and government for their dwelling in accessible albeit destitute areas.  With the urban population growing, so would the mounds of garbage and all its derivatives.

With the recent cry against the pork barrel, the voice of the people brings to attention two things.  The need for a transparent management of our national coffers, and the total eradication of corruption, that not only bleeds our reputation but also takes down with it our economy.

These things are no longer new to us.  The clamor for change, the yell for reform, the campaign for nationalism and a real love for country.

What is new to us, is that this time, we mean it.  And this time, maybe this time, we can see positive change from top, to bottom.

Let us build our nation again and truly take part by at least, following the basic rules we have.  There are many helpers to keep us in line.  The Bible has the Ten Commandments.  Atty. Alexander Lacson has his 12 things every Filipino should do.  And we have so many signs and billboards that shout out rules.  Our share is to adhere and follow what is good.

God bless our country!
