Getting ready for the school days

With only a few more days to go before the start of classes, we hope that our authorities are ready to deal with the traffic problem that comes with the school days.

We also hope that the drivers, especially the parents that would be taking their small kids to school would properly park their vehicles before taking out the huge school bags and walk their kids to the gate and then spend several minutes hugging and waving goodbye to them. We understand that it is hard to be separated with our children, but the other drivers might not understand your attachment to your children.

Make sure your vehicle is in a good condition. It would not be good if your kids would be late on the first few days of school because the “car broke down” or “there was traffic.”

The earlier you leave for school might mean your kids will have to sleep in the car, but this also means lighter traffic and better parking areas where you can spend more time preparing them for school.

A reader called us up last week inquiring about the traffic experiment making the Panganiban Street open only to oneway traffic.

The reader, who resides in one of the inner streets near the area, said that it has been some time since the experiment was done and there seems to be no outcome reported if it works or not.

He said that the closure of the road to traffic coming from N. Bacalso seems to only allow more vehicles to park around the Cebu City Medical Center, but this can be solved if the city would just designate parking spaces and not make it hard for the general public to pass the street.

Since he lives in one of the streets in the area, getting to his place has also become a very long travel.

We hope CITOM can shed light on this matter.

It seems that the junction boxes that have been painted with huge X marks are rarely respected by drivers.

Well, this goes for many other traffic signs when there are no traffic enforcers around.

Maybe the traffic authorities ought to step up their efforts so that they can earn more revenue for the local government units from the fines that will be collected.

This will definitely help discipline the drivers.

A female reader complained to us for the second time this year that a traffic officer called her attention to the restriction code on her license, which is 1 and 2, but does not include 4.

She was told that she could not drive an automatic transmission vehicle because she does not have restriction code 4.

We have clarified this matter with Alita Pulga, one of the most helpful people at the Land Transportation Office (LTO)-7, and she explained to us that one does not need restriction code 4 to drive an automatic transmission vehicle.

Maybe these volunteers trying to help implement the traffic laws must undergo more training.
