Preparing for the construction

Although we don’t know exactly when the construction of the Mambaling flyover would start, we’re happy to see many notices plastered in Cebu City and nearby areas about the matter.

While we welcome the effort to inform the public, there are certain concerns, which fellow motorists have raised to us and they hope our traffic authorities would do something about in preparation for the construction.

Among the streets that will be used a diversion during the construction are F. Llamas and Sabellano in barangay Punta Princesa.

These two streets are known as traffic chokepoints particularly in the area where they intersect.

The tricycles are the major cause of traffic congestion at Sabellano St. and add to that the jeepneys that stop in the NO STOPPING area to pick up passengers.

There are also structures that have encroached into the sidewalk that add to the congestion.

For F. Llamas, there are also the tricycles, the jeepneys that stop anywhere and the vendors that are selling on the road and not on the sidewalk.

In order to help ease the problems of the motorists during the construction of the Mambaling flyover, these traffic problems must be immediately addressed.

A motorist said, “molihok kaha nang city (government) ana nga ting election man?”

She said that the authorities might not take action fearing that they would lose the votes of the tricycle drivers and vendors, who will be affected.

While we don’t know if any action would really be taken soon, we are hoping that the city officials will take effort to help make Cebu City a better place for all of us.

Another reader sent this text message, “the problem in Punta has long been there and the change in administration in the barangay hasn’t improved things.”

Maybe our friend and fellow sports commissioner, barangay captain Rolly Diorico can help address this matter, which we’re sure is one of the challenges he is facing.

Several sent us text messages about the traffic instructions painted on the Cebu South Coastal Road.

Here are some of them:

“You’re right about having signs, but also having nobody to implement the laws.”

“Daghan gihapon motor bay sa lane nga dili para nila.”

“Talisay City needs a traffic czar nga kamao gyud dili kanang mahilig lang mamintal sa dan.”

“Napapas na ug sugod ilang pintal, pila kaha ilang budget ana?”
