No helmet while driving a car

A still “stunned” reader called us up the other week to relay to us a funny but irritating incident that happened to him in Lapu-Lapu City.

The reader, who was on board a car, which is heavily tinted, was stopped by an airport policeman, a certain AP Beltran near the checkpoint at the entrance of the road going to the airport.

What surprised the reader was that when he opened his window to inquire what his violation was, he was told that he had no helmet.

Yes folks. A guy driving a car was told by the apprehending officer that he had no helmet and this is not a story spun just to spite somebody.

The officer probably realized his boo-boo and corrected himself. He then said that he meant the driver did not have his seatbelt on.

The driver did not complain and just handed his license, but it was only moments after that “stupefying” experience that he realized that there was no way for that officer to have seen him inside his heavily tinted car unless Beltran had x-ray vision.

The driver had to go to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to claim his license and hopes that such way of apprehending motorists would not be done.

It was also a lesson learned for him to comply with the seatbelt law and he is now even thinking of buying a helmet to wear when he is driving hehehe…

A few readers have commented on the issue about motorcycle drivers not following their lane.

One reader said that one reason why the practice is tolerated by law enforcers in that even these people in authority do this.

Another reader is asking if he would have any obligations if he hits them when they are on his lane traveling the opposite direction.

We understand the disappointment of the motorists and as usual we hope that the traffic law enforcers would do something.

“There are invisible traffic signs in the south.”

This was a text message sent to us by a motorist friend, who noted how some signs right in the middle of the highway in Talisay City and Minglanilla can’t be seen at night.

She said that one sign in Linao, Minglanilla even has some CDs stuck to it to help serve as reflectors.
