CEBU, Philippines - Although more and more retailers are embracing the trend in using “environment-friendly” shopping bags, Ayala Center Cebu (ACC) will be working closely with the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA-Cebu) to push a total implementation of the “green bag” campaign among retailers here.
ACC division head Joy Polloso said that the mall will be working with PRA-Cebu to encourage tenants, especially the small and medium retailers to eventually shift into using environment-friendly shopping bags.
“It’s easier to convince other retailers [or merchants] to adopt ‘green bag’ campaign if we work together with PRA,” Polloso said.
The plan of PRA-Cebu to venture into bulk-buying strategy to get cheaper cost of “environment-friendly” shopping bags could be a good tool to convince small retailers to embrace this trend.
PRA-Cebu president Melanie Ng said that it’s easier now to implement the “green bag” campaign among retailers as shopping malls are also cooperating and going towards the direction.
“Everyone is working towards the same goal. More and more retail players are supporting the environment, regardless of the cost especially in implementing a total shift to provide green shopping bags,” Ng said.
On the other hand, despite the call for retail players to use biodegradable shopping bags to curb the ugly effects of global change, one of Cebu’s largest plastic manufacturers sees lesser demand for this particular product. —Ehda M. Dagooc
