True Heroes, True Statesmen

Perhaps we should really celebrate every hero’s day more often to remind us to create more and more heroes in our midst.

It seems like the ideals of heroism and true statesmanship have long been buried in forgotten mounds. Revisited only when outstanding contributions of legacies are remembered.

With the constant bickerings of our leaders, one tends to just shut off the blaring display of self interest and greed that are implied in critiques and criticisms being strafed from both ends of the political lines. My jaundiced heart can not even determine who is telling what and where to find answers to my confusion so I just live on shutting them off in self-preservation and just focus on my business. I think that is what most of us are doing. And I also know that to be the best. To just plod on.

I now believe what my history teachers used to jibe about having heroes only in the matchbox. I hope I can still see in my lifetime a true and sincere love fore country. Where statesmanship rules over the desire for power and control.

The recent elections in the United States took only a few days to complete. In debates between presidentiables, there was evident respect albeit the difference in opinion and standpoints. After the race was concluded, a close-door meeting between leaders was done. Their nation did not question the discussion or its privacy. And media respected the need for a secure unveiling of plans. They did not force open the doors to find out the secrets of their country.

In the Philippines, our pastime remains watching reality shows that delve into personal lives. Gossip and stardom are in and they spill over on to our treatment of government issues. This is no longer a reality show where stardom and instant millionaires go happy with the pot. In this reality show, it is our country that is at stake. The undying push to take out the president without much of an alternative even if the election year is near. We cover the issues that are more pressing. Even the world suffers the economic crisis.

But we do not want to talk about the world. And how the concerns affect us. We do not take notice of big conglomerates slowly merging and selling. We instead continue to wash our dirty linens in public and make our country look so corrupt and then resent it when other nations treat us as such. Ugh!!!

I am sure all of us are sad about how we have become. How we face a crisis by brewing a new one to cover up an large issue. There are attempts to clean up the country. And I hope they succeed. Actually, there is only one solution to all these and it has been written long ago. Going back to God is the only way. Following Him as our best example and relying important decisions on prayer and studied analyses of events. When large and booming nations like the U.S. exchanged their faith for tolerance and materialism, they lost their ground. The nation was built on a God they trust and that is the only way it can be rebuilt and the same goes for any country.

Only that way will we really find true heroes and true statesmen.
