Ely Buendia lends voice to Sony’s ‘Music Deserves Respect’ drive
MANILA, Philippines - Ely Buendia, a long-standing figure in the local music scene, has made waves both locally and internationally for his musical prowess. He is a legend well known for producing chart toppers through his various musical projects that include The Eraserheads, Pupil and most recently, The Oktaves.
And as the music scene continues to evolve, his voice remains to be among the most recognized in the industry. Now, Buendia is lending his voice to a new project — Sony’s “Music Deserves Respect†campaign.
When Buendia started his musical career, he picked up a guitar and started writing songs just through sheer inspiration. Like many Filipinos, he was a music lover, a fan of the local music scene who was constantly inspired by the Manila sounds he was hearing from legends Rico J. Puno, Juan de la Cruz and Hotdog.
Then he was inspired to perform after watching videos and hearing the music of The Beatles and the original King of Rock, Elvis Presley.
“Well, I’m basically a music lover like everybody else. I started being a fan first,†Buendia recalls. “I get inspired all the time by other artists and I don’t just listen to one kind of genre. I try to sample every type of music because I love music and whenever I hear a song that I like, my first impulse is to at least try to do something as good as that song.â€
Obviously, he has not disappointed. With classics such as “Pare Ko,†“Ang Huling El Bimbo,†“Ligaya,†and “With A Smile,†Buendia has established himself among the most popular Filipino songwriters. Many have credited his songwriting to be among the main reasons why he got his first record deal.
Creative process
When asked about his creative process for composing music, he says, “The fastest song I have written was in five minutes, but there have been some songs that would take years to be finished. Creating music is like a magic trick that requires a lot of hard work in order for it to be executed perfectly. There is a process involved in doing it and it’s time that people are educated on how music is created to get a greater appreciation for it.â€
“We make it look easy because it is fun to make music and perform, but you really cannot have fun unless you have mastered your craft first and you cannot master your craft if you don’t invest your hard work and commitment,†he adds.
The hard work and commitment does not come from Buendia alone, most especially when he’s in the recording studio. Behind the curtains, he has a team of technicians, engineers and other musicians who help him in writing the lyrics and finding the right sound to go together with it.
It is a tedious task that only a few can do and only a few have been able to achieve. That is because these artists understand that creating good music requires complete dedication and commitment to the craft, and they strive to let their listeners hear what they hear — every sound and every tune the way it is meant to be heard.
With his Sony MDR-1R in hand, Buendia is able to hear what he’s been striving to achieve in his music — perfection. It is designed to expertly reproduce vocal acoustics clearly with its cutting-edge design, ultimate comfort and precision sound quality, allowing him and his fans to hear his music the way it’s meant to be heard.
“Through the years, Sony has maintained a good reputation of delivering excellent sound quality with their headphones. As a musician I grew up using Sony headphones, in the recording studio and even for personal use. Sony’s latest headphones series, MDR-1R, is ideal for a musician like me because of the clear sound quality and comfortable fit. Every note and instrument is clearly distinguished, just how it was intended in the recording studio,†Buendia says.
Buendia knows the importance of choosing the right lyrics to go with the right song and understands how each sound is supposed to sound. He has constantly shown the dedication and commitment to mastering his craft and has always given music what it truly deserves, his respect.

“Our latest MDR-1R series of headphones represents our commitment to the ‘Music Deserves Respect’ campaign. Here at Sony, we appreciate great music and we want to give our listeners top-quality products that will allow them to hear great music, the way it is meant to be heard — from the sound of every lyric to the sound of every instrument,†adds Deacosta.
