Samsung unveils Android-powered Galaxy S smartphone

- Manny N. de los Reyes -

MANILA, Philippines - Samsung is revolutionizing the way we think about and use smartphones with its new Samsung Galaxy S that runs on Google’s newest Android 2.1 operating system.

Launched globally early last June, the Samsung Galaxy S has been well received by over 100 mobile operators worldwide, selecting the phone as their key smartphone market driver.

Packed with state-of-the-art features, the Galaxy S is a powerhouse of technological features encased in one sleek 9.9-mm thin package.

Built around Samsung’s “Smart Life” concept, the Galaxy S simplifies the daily grind with features that are simple, organized and integrated.

Discerning users will be delighted by the phone’s huge and brilliant four-inch Super AMOLED screen, which offers a breathtaking viewing experience with its brighter, clearer and less reflective images.

Users can enjoy viewing high-definition videos or reading eBooks, thanks to the Galaxy S’ super-fast 1GHz processor (with 512MB RAM), customizable fonts, easy text search and intuitive book list management.

They can work with ease with ThinkFree applications for viewing and editing Microsoft Office 2007 documents. They can write ideas first then send them later in a format of their choice - SMS, MMS, e-mail, calendar or memo.

The Galaxy S also boasts Daily Briefing, which gives instant access to weather, news, stocks and the scheduler. Users can share files easily through All Share, which utilizes inter-device connectivity via Samsung’s DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) technology.

Samsung’s new flagship handset features an augmented reality browser, Layar, which provides real-time location-based search. Other useful features include a TouchWiz 3.0 user interface, which provides quick access; Swype, which allows easy text input while on the go; and generous onboard memory storage of 8GB or 16GB.

The Galaxy S features Social Hub so users can keep up with their social media life anywhere and anytime, by integrating their contacts and inbox messages with their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

At a glance, users can chat with friends, view SNS messages and read e-mail. They can also schedule regular updates so that they will always be updated with their friends’ posts, statuses, messages, and uploaded multimedia files on their favorite social networking sites.

The Galaxy S also has a 5-MP digital camera with numerous special effects functions. It can playback and record HD videos at 720p@30fps. It has Bluetooth, USB 2.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity.

The biggest news, of course, is the fact that the Galaxy S is powered by Google’s Android operating system, which supports easier Web browsing and provides access to over 50,000 applications from both Android Market and Samsung Apps.

And to further develop the Android market in the Philippines, Samsung has partnered with Globe Telecom mother company, Singtel.

“The Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S will set a new standard for smartphones, and the excitement we’ve seen from operators and retailers for this device is testament to that,” says JK Shin, president and head of mobile communications business.

The Samsung Galaxy will be exclusively available for free to Globe subscribers who will avail themselves of the Plan 2,499 until July 31. They will also get one month Super Surf absolutely free so they can maximize the power and experience of the Galaxy S.

After this period, the Galaxy S will be offered free at higher Globe plans such as Plan 3799. For prepaid, the Galaxy S comes loaded with five days of Super Surfing for P32,995.

“Globe and Samsung have always been at the forefront of innovation, and now with the Galaxy S, Samsung has well and truly clinched that positioning,” said Cathy Santamaria, Globe brand head.

“Adoption of Android-powered devices is growing globally by leaps and bounds, and we want our users to have the enhanced experience that the Galaxy S’ Android 2.1 offers, whether for browsing the Web or tracking important tasks on your phone. Working with Samsung, we aim to make being Globe-connected a real pleasure,” she added.
