Samsung's Jet takes off

MANILA, Philippines - Samsung Mobile has just given wings to its new high-speed device, the aptly named Jet mobile phone.

The Samsung Jet is a high-end handset whose innovative features aim to take the handset to the realms of being a “smarter than a smartphone” multimedia powerhouse.

Promising to open up a whole new world of Web experience, the Wi-Fi-enabled Jet’s high-performance Dolfin Web browser has been developed in-house and is designed to allow easy and super-fast surfing.

It sports sleek lines and subtle curves, allowing it to fit into one’s hand securely and comfortably. Admirable build quality and high-end materials give it an expensive feel you’d expect from phones costing way more than the Jet’s P22,990 suggested retail price.

The highly touchable main key, a black gem-like cubic icon, is beautifully inlaid into a slightly textured matte surface that looks quite durable. Unlike other devices with polished surfaces, the Jet does not collect smudges and seems to wear its clean, pristine look very well.

The Jet supports the option of multi-window browsing to surf several webpages simultaneously — up to five pages at any one time. It also allows multi-window Web browsing and has a book-marking widget to save your favorite websites.

The phone features a bespoke multi-tasking manager, making what was once a slow and complicated process for a mobile handheld device much easier and faster.

In addition, the multiple background download, multi-purpose address field and ad-blocker ensure users only need to focus on what they really want to. One-finger zoom can be used not only for Internet browsing, but also for Photo browser and file viewer to see TXT, PDF and PPT files in four times bigger size — all just with one fingertip while you’re on the move. And you’ll be browsing a lot of photos, thanks to the Jet’s superb five-megapixel, auto-focus camera with a dual-LED flash.

Super-fast Web browsing capabilities aside, a touch-screen smartphone needs to have an equally capable display. To this end, Samsung has given the Jet a display that offers unrivalled quality and brilliance — long a strength of Samsung mobile phones.

For one thing, the 3.1-inch, 16-million-color WVGA AMOLED display is four times sharper than a WQVGA screen. The Jet’s screen provides stunning, super-bright and vivid images in perfect natural colors, with the very best high-resolution display for viewing multimedia on the go.

The Samsung Jet’s brilliant display has a 180-degree viewing angle, gives an impressively fast touch response and is also very efficient in its power consumption. Because of its WVGA AMOLED technology, the Jet consumes 40 percent less energy than a mobile phone equipped with a conventional TFT-LCD screen.

The Samsung Jet features TouchWiz 2.0 user interface (UI), an upgrade from previous TouchWiz user interfaces seen on the F480 and earlier Samsung full-touch mobiles.

Multiple applications run both seamlessly and simultaneously through the use of the Jet’s powerful application processor, enabling users to dip in and out of the features as they wish.

With its intuitive 3D media gate and motion-response user interfaces, users can enjoy a dynamic, content-based experience. The 3D media gate on the Samsung Jet offers easy access to six key multimedia features, such as Photo album, Music player, Video player, FM Radio, Games and the Internet, all simply accessed by rolling a cube interface on the screen.

The Jet also features “motion gate,” Samsung’s own motion-recognition engine that brings you access to your multimedia favorites as well as speed dialing just by tapping, tilting or flipping the handset.

It even has a “smart unlock” feature, which enables users to unlock the phone and execute the menu directly by drawing an alphabet letter on the screen. Users can set up the menu that they want to go to directly according to the alphabet letters from A to Z.

Smart unlock allows users to program their own, customized movements to operate the handset, bringing the ultimate in personalization.

The Jet also has an online widget function to access useful mobile applications and get live information such as weather, news and search engines by online widget downloading.

There are widgets already available on the device and users can download more from the website. These include a personalization widget to adapt the screen layout and wallpaper. A three-page main menu and three-page widget screen offer quick and easy application search and reuse.

The Samsung Jet also has an A-GPS application to provide navigation services in life-like 3D, conveying real places, information and directions in real-time. This incorporates 3D Map Navigation, GPS on Google maps and location-based services.

The GPS system features geo-tagging, enabled through a geo-magnetic sensor to send location information and updates on traffic conditions by SMS, link location information to navigation, and a compass. Samsung Jet’s GPS application can run on “Drive to” or “Walk to” mode.

When it comes to music, the Jet’s unique features give users the option to operate simultaneous playback audio and scroll through the phone’s music library with superb sound quality. The Jet’s 3.5-mm audio jack lets you hook it up with your favorite stereo headphones.

For video, the DVD-like video playback recording (with D1 video playback and D1 30fps video recording) enables seamless playback without residuals and the ability to instantly download and play DivX and Xvid formats without converting or resizing — all in High-Def-like quality on its brilliant AMOLED screen. The phone also boasts DNSe and SRS Sound Effect technologies for superior sound quality.
