Nokia to integrate maps, navigation into its handsets

Nokia has signed an agreement to acquire gate5, a leading supplier of software and services for location-based information on mobile devices.
By acquiring gate5, Nokia can offer consumers maps, routing, navigation and other location-based services, integrated into its mobile device user interface.
After closing the deal, gate5 will become an integrated part of the Multimedia Experiences entity.
"The personal navigation device (PND) market is in a rapid growth phase with the global market size expected to reach 15 million units in 2006. By integrating the maps and navigation capabilities into our devices, Nokia will participate in this growth," said Anssi Vanjoki, head of the Multimedia Business Group.
"Nokia Nseries multimedia computers offer people new ways to explore their world navigation and maps enhance this journey and add to the overall experience," Anssi said.
Maps and navigation will become a standard feature in all Nokia Nseries multimedia computers, Internet tablets and in wide range of Nokia phones.
In addition, Nokia will introduce a number of GPS-enabled mobile devices in 2007.
Headquartered in Berlin, gate5 employs approximately 70 people, mainly based in Germany.
Nokia plans to continue to lead the navigational development in Berlin and grow the business around the current gate5 team.
Gate5 provides software and services for personal navigation device manufacturers around the world.
The company has developed smart2go platform, which combines route guidance with travel guides and turns ones Symbian smartphone, Microsoft Windows Mobile smartphone, PocketPC or Palm system into a full-scale navigation system.
The gate5 solution offers seamless navigation with features such as house polygons, earth browsing and dynamic route guidance.
Based on maps and routing functionality, there are countless useful features such as travel guides and the possibility to search for restaurants, hotels or shops.
Nokia will continue to support gate5s existing personal navi-gation device (PND) vendors as well as operators in the area of navigation and location-based services.
It will also continue to support gate5s multi-platform strategy for mobile devices, including Sym-bian, Linux, Java and Windows Mobile platforms.
