Motorola still tops processor market

-
NEW ORLEANS – It’s official. Motorola Inc. remains the undisputed market leader in communications processors.

With well over 100 million units shipped to date, Motorola’s communications processor portfolio is credited with over 350 customers and greater than 5,000 design wins – with its popular PowerQUICC family of processors leading the charge.

According to a report released recently by Gartner Dataquest, Motorola ranks number one with 74.7 percent market share in communications processor ICs.

Motorola created the communications processor market over a decade ago with the introduction of the MC68302, the industry’s first multi-protocol microprocessor.

At a time when the Internet was in its infancy, Motorola, together with its innovative customers and alliance members, pioneered the processing and intelligence behind the systems that make global communications and productivity a reality today.

Designed to be versatile, Motorola’s communications processors have found their place in a wide variety of applications. The PowerQUICC family of processors provides the communication intelligence for a large proportion of DSL modems, SOHO routers, remote access servers, DSLAMs, central office switching equipment, wireless infrastructure base stations, enterprise routers and media gateways that are on the market today. Chances are, if you’re connected to a network, Motorola’s PowerQUICC processors are routing and switching your data.

"From the design of our original 68302, we’ve maintained a philosophy of delivering a proven architecture with unsurpassed integration," said David Perkins, vice president and general manager of Motorola’s Networking and Computing Systems Group.
