Consumer queries via text

Vital information like scheduled power outages and other public announcements can now be accessed with the use of a Smart cell phone by simply typing in keywords.
"We are developing these types of services to enable consumers to experience the speed, accuracy and convenience in obtaining useful information wireless devices now offer," said Marlon Mendoza, product development manager of Smart Communications Inc.
Speaking before a group of journalists in Davao City recently, Mendoza disclosed that Smart is now working with several organizations and companies in creating specialized content services for their members and clients.
An initial result of this partnering is the text-based service of Davao Light and Power Corp. (DLPC).
Mendoza said Smart assisted the DLPC in developing an "information pull" service that will enable their customers to obtain updates on power interruptions and outages directly from their Smart cell phones.
Davaoeños type the keyword DLPC plus the parameter (e.g. DLPC <area>) then send it to access number 288. The reply will contain the latest power-related information covering the specified area.
For instance, if a subscriber types in DLPC BAJADA, then sends it to 288, the reply will be "There is no known power outage as of this moment. If you are experiencing one, please report immediately at tel. no. 222-0088."
Should a subscriber want to find out the areas being served by the Davao power company, he/she only types DLPC, then sends it to 288. The reply will list the areas Buhangin, Agdao, Calinan, Sta. Ana, Bajada, Poblacion, Matina and Sasa.
"This innovative service helps DLPCs call center to better cope with the increased volume of calls made by its corporate and residential subscribers during power interruptions," Mendoza said.
He added that more information on DLPCs services will soon be offered to the public. These include bill queries and payment, including information "push" SMS application. "Push" services allow you to access specific services regularly and automatically, without you having to send instructions each time.
"We are very optimistic that other utility companies will soon follow DLPCs lead. Smart is more than willing to work closely with companies in creating concepts, developing, customizing and implementing services that would help their clients and businesses as well," Mendoza said.
Smart Communications has come up with innovative offerings enabling subscribers to create their very own text-based services. It recently launched MyTxt which allows a subscriber to create his/her own text service using the Smart mobile phone by defining a keyword and updating the information in it.
