No extension for Marantan

CAMP VICENTE LIM,Laguna , Philippines – Calabarzon police director Brig. Gen. Hansel Marantan retires from the service today after Malacañang rejected a recommendation to extend him for one year.
“There will be no extension for General Marantan. He can still help in other ways,” Palace communications officer Claire Castro said at a media briefing yesterday.
Marantan is celebrating his 56th birthday today, the mandatory retirement age for uniformed personnel.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, who chairs the National Police Commission, asked Malacañang to retain Marantan as head of the Calabarzon police, citing his skills in high-impact operations.
Remulla said that extending Marantan’s service for another year would ensure continuity of ongoing anti-crime and public safety operations in Calabarzon.
In a farewell tribute on Monday, members of the Calabarzon police honored Marantan.
The general spent his remaining days in the service visiting a patrolman wounded in a recent sting in Dasmariñas, and the family of another officer slain during the same anti-narcotics operation.
Marantan was among 12 police officers aquitted by a Manila court over the 2013 Atimonan shooting in Quezon province that left 13 people dead including an environmental advocate, three policemen and a suspected gambling lord. Probers had described it as a “rubout.”
