Air, sea ports ready for Christmas

MANILA, Philippines — With the influx of air and sea travelers expected during the holidays, measures have been put in place to prevent congestion.

More than 4.5 million sea passengers are expected during the Christmas season, Philippine Ports Authority general manager Jay Santiago said yesterday.

Despite the projection, Santiago said no port nationwide will be congested.

Frontline personnel will follow a no-leave policy from Dec. 22 to Jan. 3, 2025 to ensure full manpower, he noted.

“We are complementing the no-leave policy with a full manpower policy. Our terminals have also worked with shipping lines to secure the schedule of our vessels and they are coordinating with the Philippine Coast Guard and Maritime Industry Authority,” Santiago said.

If a weather disturbance develops during the holidays, Santiago said they have allocated resources to aid stranded passengers.

Travelers are reminded to remain vigilant against holiday scams, such as fraudsters offering travel insurance even when shipping lines no longer require buying one.

Airports, meanwhile, have implemented comprehensive contingency measures to address potential flight disruptions and ensure seamless operations, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.

The CAAP has ensured the full operational readiness of its communication, navigation, surveillance/air traffic management systems.

Under the Department of Transportation’s Oplan Byaheng Ayos: Pasko 2024 from Dec. 20 to Jan. 3, 2025, the CAAP is committed to ensuring safe, efficient and comfortable travel at 44 airports under its jurisdiction.

Malasakit kits containing essential items and help desks will be provided by the CAAP for passengers.

In another development, the PPA and Manila North Harbour Port Inc. have announced the completion of the first phase of a facility improvement program.

Lavatories and the passenger departure area at the Manila port were improved.

Modernization of the port’s air-conditioning system, among others, will commence in January. — Rudy Santos, Ghio Ong
