The best laptops of CES 2016

YOU GOT TECH - Abe Olandres - The Philippine Star

The Consumer Electronics Show 2016 in Las Vegas has just concluded and, as usual, there were tons of new devices being announced by a lot of brands. For quite some time, laptops didn’t get a lot of attention but this year it looks like they’ve somehow gotten some limelight with the introduction of many gaming laptops and hybrid 2-in-1 detachables.

Intel also had a huge contribution to this development with their 6th-generation Intel Core i-series and the 2nd-generation Core M series.

Here are five of the best laptops/tablets we’ve seen in this year’s CES 2016.

Razer Blade Stealth

Since Razer started making their own gaming laptops, all eyes are on the Blade series. This year, Razer once again showed they’re not a one-trick pony with the introduction of the Razer Blade Stealth.

The Blade Stealth is basically a half-an-inch thin ultrabook made with CNC aluminum chassis running an Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB RAM and up to 512GB SSD storage. The 12.5-inch display has resolution options that goes up to UltraHD or 4K.

What makes it unique is the companion Razer Core which is an external GPU enclosure that can accommodate any graphics card of your choice. That basically turns the Blade Stealth into a full-fledged gaming PC.

Alienware 13 Oled

Dell has had a number of gaming laptops with varying display sizes but the smallest Alienware 13 has been one of our favorites, having been using one for about a year now.

Last week, the company also announced the Alienware 13 OLED. It basically has similar configuration as the previous generations -- 6th-gen Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD or 1TB HDD.

What’s notable with it is that the Alienware 13 OLED is the world’s first gaming laptop with OLED display. OLEDs have been employed in high-end TVs and flagship smartphones that promises higher contrast, better color saturation and deeper blacks.

Asus Rog Gx700

The ASUS ROG GX700 which the company introduced last year also turned heads in CES 2016. This gaming laptop features a 17.3-inch 4K/UHD display, overclockable 6th-generation Intel K-SKU processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 graphics, and an external water cooling system.

Asus has done really well with their Republic of Gamers (ROG) series. The ROG GX700 is currently on the top of their line-up with a 17.3-inch 4K/Ultra HD display, an overclockable 6th-gen Core i7 chip.

The ROG GX700 is powered by an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 graphics card, not the 980M that’s built for laptops but the one for desktops. This means much better gaming performance but also requires more cooling. That’s why Asus built it with an external liquid-cooling system!

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Tablet

Lenovo has been doing a lot of interesting innovations with their laptops, tablets and 2-in-1s these days but the most interesting would probably have to be the ThinkPad X1 Tablet.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet allows you to attach Productivity Modules like the keyboard, pico-projector, Intel RealSense camera, or an extra battery that can last up to 15 hours. Other features include a 12-inch 2K (2160 x 1440) IPS display, built-in kickstand, USB Type-C, and powered by an Intel Core M processor.

Dell Xps 12 Tablet

The Dell XPS 13 was one of the best-looking laptops of 2015. So it’s not surprising that they’re pushing the innovation with the other models in their line-up.

The sleek-looking Dell XPS 12 is one of them. It sports a 12.5-inch display available in Full HD and 4K UHD resolution with Gorilla Glass NBT. Like its XPS cousins, it has thin side bezels. It is powered by a 6th-gen Intel Core M5 Processor, 8GB RAM, up to 256GB SSD, and Windows 10.
