One tick ahead of the rest: Seiko Astron GPS Solar

MANILA, Philippines - Frequent travelers are familiar with the inconvenience of having to constantly adjust their watches when moving from one time zone to another. 

However, there is a new generation of watches that automatically keeps you on time wherever you are in the world. In 2014, Seiko released its latest models in its Astron collection equipped with GPS solar capability.

The Astron GPS Solar has a patented, low-energy-consumption GPS receiver that receives GPS signals and identifies the time zone, time and date data using the global network of GPS satellites. It recognizes all the different time zones on the planet.

This innovation follows the credo of Seiko founder Kintaro Hattori to “Always be one step ahead of the rest.” By adopting technological innovations that were developed over the decades, Seiko secured its position as a world leader in timekeeping.

On Dec. 25, 1969, it introduced the world’s first quartz watch, naming it the Seiko Quartz Astron. This watch set the global standard for quartz watches. In fact, most quartz watches use the system developed by Seiko.

The Seiko Astron GPS Solar is more than just an innovation on the first Astron: it re-imagines the way a watch should keep time. From the precision timekeeping offered by the quartz mechanism, the GPS Solar takes this concept a step higher by producing a watch that automatically tells you the time anywhere in the world.

The Seiko Astron automatically receives time signals from four or more GPS satellites that orbit the earth, identifying the wearer’s exact location on the globe. The hands automatically adjust to the correct local time via Atomic Clock precision. What’s more, since it is solar-powered, there is no need to change batteries ever. It comes with a perpetual calendar that is accurate until Feb. 2100.

The Seiko Astron comes in two models: the GPS Solar Chronograph 8X82, and the GPS Solar 7X52.

The Seiko Astron GPS Solar Chronograph 8X82 is not just a timekeeping device, but is also a chronograph. It can keep track of elapsed time for up to six hours in 1/5-second increments. The GPS Solar Chronograph has a limited edition model, the SSE001, with only 7,000 units made available worldwide.
