Dell donates technology to support education program of ChildHope

MANILA, Philippines - “Dell has a heritage of listening to customers and developing customized solutions that make technology work harder for people,” said Richard Teo, Dell Philippines president.

“We apply this same approach to our Dell Powering the Possible program, an advocacy focused on four areas of giving that include learning, children’s cancer care, disaster relief and social entrepreneurship,” Teo added.

The Dell Powering the Possible program was designed to give others the power to do more through a combination of Dell technology and solutions, resources and know-how.

“Our initiatives to support learning empower the youth by closing the technology gap and providing training in information and communications technology skills — all focused on improving, enhancing and jump-starting learning for life,” Teo said.

“By placing state-of-the-art technology into underserved communities and working with non-profit organizations, our action helps young people discover new possibilities, change their lives, and unleash their true potential,” Teo added.

The core of this initiative is getting Dell technology and solutions into the hands of the most needy youth of an underserved population to serve as a catalyst for lifelong learning and job-career readiness.

Any Dell technology, solution or service may be used to accomplish the work of accredited programs. Strong consideration will be provided to new organizations which are requesting more than half of their funding for Dell technology, solutions or services.

• Whiteboards. Two units will be provided, one for the classroom and the other for the mobile bus to conduct teaching on the go.

A world with no borders

Since 1989, Childhope Asia Philippines (CHAP) has been at the forefront of advocating for the cause of street children in the Philippines and elsewhere in Asia. It works to uplift street children from the hazards of working and living on the streets and aims to realize a better future for them by providing learning opportunities outside the confines of a formal school set-up.

The CHAP works with underprivileged street children and out-of-school youth in Metro Manila to give them equal opportunities for learning through several programs, including basic literacy and numeracy, advanced learning modules for elementary and secondary levels, computer literacy, and life skills, values and primary health education.

To facilitate its outreach and education program, the CHAP is aided by mobile education vans with street educators that are deployed to 20 locations daily where street children are commonly found — parks or on the sidewalks of Manila, Quezon City, Caloocan, Makati, Pasay and Parañaque — to teach children there.

The core of this partnership is to provide the underserved youth and educators with access to technology and serve as a catalyst for lifelong learning and career readiness.

Dell technology will be used to equip the mobile education vans with laptops and the required education software to accomplish the work of accredited programs administered by CHAP, benefiting an estimated 500 children.

In addition, the grant will also enable CHAP to set up a computer lab with Dell desktops to provide digital learning and basic computer literacy classes to 120 selected street children brought to the charity’s premises.

The computers at the center will also be installed with a database program that will be used by the 33 street educators for recording and tracking the progress of the street children under the program.

This will greatly help in monitoring the welfare of the children and in evaluating the impact of the program to the beneficiaries.

“CHAP’s request grant from Dell is to continue the Alternative Education sessions such as the UN Convention for the Rights of the Child Substance Abuse Prevention Education, Life Skills/Life Goals and Basic Literacy and Numeracy among the 500 street children participants through its mobile education vans,” said CHAP executive director Teresita Silva.

“These two vehicles are equipped with television and other reading and board game materials. Portable projectors are used in conducting different sessions instead of using tarpaulins and other printing materials which cost an adequate amount in printing fee,” Silva said.

The street children taking the Basic Computer classes will graduate after completing 16 sessions, Silva said.
