Smart bares 2011 SWEEP finalists

MANILA, Philippines - Smart Communications Inc. has narrowed its search for the most innovative wireless applications to the top 10 entries that will vie in the finals of the 8th SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards.

The finalists were short-listed from a total of 143 entries from 46 school partners under the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP) nationwide.

They include three entries from Luzon schools, three from Metro Manila, one from the Visayas and three from Mindanao.

A student-faculty team from the Bataan State Peninsula University developed an Aquamarine Solution to Salinity and Oxygen Using SMS, while the Batangas State University created Lakewatch: A Water Quality Monitoring System at Taal Lake.   

Also from Luzon is Wesleyan University-Philippines’ Smart Tracking and Communication System (STACS): Vital Sign and Geographical Location Monitoring via GSM.

Also in the finals are two entries from the Mapua Institute of Technology: Fault Line Data Acquisition and Monitoring System, and Wearable Obstacle Detection System and Braille Cell Phone for the Blind. 

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ Electrically controlled device for fish fermentation using hydrolysis process for the production of fish sauce completes the entries from Metro Manila schools.

The University of San Carlos’ Design and Implementation of a Low-cost Breathalyzer with GSM module interface is the lone finalist from the Visayas.

The Mindanao schools that entered the finals are Ateneo de Zamboanga University with Automated Barangay Cases Filing System, Notre Dame of Marbel University with Smart E-mobilized, and the University of Southeastern Philippines with Smart CARES (Community Assistance on Remote Vital Signs Monitoring for Emergency Situations).
