HP puts together solutions for education, retail, business

- Alma Buelva -

JAKARTA — HP has purposely selected from its existing array of products what it believes are its best-fitting technologies to date for the education, retail and business sectors.

Under a campaign called HP 2010: Elevate, the world’s largest IT company puts together solutions that it deems perfect for its customers from these three sectors to arm themselves with as the economic wheel turns for the better.

HP sees digital transformation, cloud computing and green computing as key trends that will help elevate businesses of all sizes.

“We have solutions to help CIOs manage the challenges coming from these three trends. Companies must simplify IT by making sure they can scale it fast and cost-effectively and cheaper, too. Cloud computing, for example, is changing how the world works,” said Ng Tian Chong, vice president and general manager of the HP Personal Systems Group, Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Korea.

“Businesses that invest innovatively in technology will be in the best position to take advantage of the recovery. Innovation was the one currency that never lost its value during the crisis,” he added.

And to drive that value, HP would like for its business customers to go for its new thin clients HP t5740, HP t5745 and HP t5325 and use the ThinPro Setup Wizard for Linux and HP Easy Config for Microsoft Windows to set up their virtual environments.

HP also threw in among its “elevate solutions” the HP Client Automation Enterprise as the only tool necessary for companies to manage all their hardware and software — resources that HP hopes include the HP Elitebook and Probook notebook series that feature HP QuickWeb and HP QuickLook 3 which allow for quick access to the Internet, e-mail, calendar and contact apps even when the notebooks had just booted up.

In addition, HP wants businesses to try the HP Skyroom, a high-definition videoconferencing software, as a green alternative to actual meetings that usually require distance travels.

For schools, HP announced it is bringing PC access to more students at a lower cost with the HP MultiSeat Computing Solution. Using a host PC and the HP MultiSeat ms6000 PC, to be shared by up to 10 students, connected via the HP MultiSeat t100 Thin Client, this shared resourcing model utilizes the host PC’s excess processing resources to operate the additional computing stations. Only the host PC is powered up so less energy is consumed.

HP executives say each HP MultiSeat t100 thin client consumes only 2.5 watts of power, reducing energy costs by up to 80 percent.

Needless to say HP has a range of netbook and notebook models ideal for students. What worth’s noting, though, is how HP Touch-Smart PCs can be used by students with special needs or those suffering from autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Down Syndrome, speech disorders and others.

For retail, HP says it has technologies to improve shoppers’ experience from the moment they enter and exit a store. With its 40+-inch HP widescreen LCD digital signage displays and other touch-screen solutions, HP hopes to help retailers attract more shoppers to their stores. And when shoppers do buy what they first saw from the HD LCD screens, HP also wants retailers to efficiently complete the transaction using HP’s point-of-sale systems.

“Our customers are moving from one-time acquisitions to modular and scalable deployment of IT solutions. Many have done consolidation of IT resources and are now looking at manageability. From managing business costs they are now preparing to manage business growths. We came up with these specific industry solutions because we want to help customers innovate with purpose,” said Ng.
