Tissue culture laboratory to rise in Bulacan

GUIGUINTO, Philippines – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has provided technology support to the ornamental plant garden community by providing a tissue culture laboratory.

Science Secretary Fortunato dela Peña led the groundbreaking ceremony on Dec. 18 for Bulacan’s first commercial plant tissue culture laboratory.

The project is a collaboration between DOST and the local government unit of Guiguinto in order to assist and promote ornamental plant gardeners of this town.

Dela Peña said the project is expected to help the plant garden sector provide new product lines and markets.

The tissue plant laboratory could also help in propagation of medicinal plants and high value crops.

From the traditional sexual and asexual plant propagation, the laboratory can produce hundreds or thousands of seedlings from a single plant stock for mass production.

The innovative laboratory for ornamental plants is to rise at the Garden City display area at the North Luzon Expressway Cloverleaf in Barangay Sta Cruz.

The construction of the building will be shouldered by the LGU, while equipment, supplies and personnel will be provided by DOST through the grants in aid program.
