Palawan's best-kept secret
MANILA, Philippines - Privacy and exclusivity do not come cheap.
A stay in most, if not all, island resorts, especially in Palawan, that boasts of privacy and exclusivity is unaffordable to middle-class Filipinos.
But Palawan’s best-kept secret, sometimes dubbed as the poor man’s Amanpulo, offers the same perfect island getaway.
Arena Island Turtle Sanctuary Resort is a four-hectare island that strikes a perfect balance of rustic charm and the comforts of modern living, giving average Filipinos the private sanctuary they have long dreamed about.
Just three hours away from Puerto Princesa, in a coastal municipality called Narra, and a few minutes ride by boat, Arena Island boasts of a dazzling shoreline, sprawling tropical landscapes, and mesmerizing havens to refresh one’s tired spirits.
The island’s charm is best described in its website as follows: “Allow Arena Island Resort in Puerto Princesa, Philippines to welcome you in a hideaway that redefines the idea of absolute paradise. Within our expansive property lie cozy spaces, showered by rustic decor and contemporary essentials. As you step inside the halls of our tranquil retreat, our facilities and services captivate you away from the troubles of city living. Experience a holiday in our resort in Puerto Princesa, Palawan — and indulge in paradise unlike any other.”
An untouched paradise
Arena Island sits on a thriving coral reef, home to a diverse marine life and resources. One can enjoy the pristine waters while snorkeling and diving. Its white sand beach entices guests and visitors to explore, swim, and be one with the original residents of the island, the pawikan. Trees abundantly grow in the island, making it an ideal home for a number of endemic birds.
Guests get to own this secluded island for a whole weekend and indulge in the luxury of their own private casita. They can rejuvenate in their exclusive spa with the professional services of their personal therapist, and their very own butler to attend to their every need.
Travel for a greener world
Designed with ecotourism in mind, Arena Island contributes a green print through its commitment to preserve the pawikan, the Philippines’ native sea turtles.
Espousing sustainable practices, providing modern amenities made with careful thought for the environment, Arena Island allows one to kick off their shoes, step into luxurious island living without the guilt of leaving carbon footprints behind.
Home to the five species of the world’s endangered sea turtles, Arena Island is mainly a refuge to the green turtles and leatherbacks. Its advocacy program, Pugad Pawikan Pilipinas, seeks to ensure their protection and conservation. When the sea turtles come onshore, at least 200 eggs are laid per batch with 45-50 days of incubation.
Arena Island cares for hatchlings in float cages and releases them after a month when the baby turtles are bigger, protecting them from predators. The hatchlings are then tagged and registered internationally in order to trace their return to Isla Arena to lay more eggs. Visitors to the island can adopt a pawikan and sponsor related costs in keeping the baby turtles safe and healthy before they go back to the sea.
