Mazda6 2.5 SKYACTIV debuts at 2013 MIAS

Angel Rivero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Following an exclusive press reveal at the Mazda Pasig dealership last Wednesday, the all-new Mazda6 made its Philippine debut at the 2013 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) late last week. The Mazda6 now incorporates the full range of SKYACTIV technologies—with its 2.5L SKYACTIV-G engine, SKYACTIV-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission, and SKYACTIV body and chassis.

“Mazda6 is our flagship model, and has come to represent the Mazda brand’s zoom-zoom driving dynamic, winning 186 awards globally since the first generation was first launched in 2002,” remarked Mazda6 Program Manager Hiroshi Kajiyama, who was there to officially present the all-new vehicle at the MIAS. This 3rd-generation Mazda6 not only embodies Mazda’s ‘KODO-Soul of Motion’ design theme, but is also their second product to incorporate the entire range of SKYACTIV technologies, since the Mazda CX-5 last year.

The 2.5L SKYACTIV-G engine showcases the highest compression ratio of any production gasoline engine in the world; and in combination with its 6-speed automatic, churns up 185ps and 250Nm of torque—achieving 0-100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and a 223km/h top speed. It claims a fuel mileage rating of 6.3L per 100kms and meets Euro 5 standards in carbon emissions.

The new Mazda6 also takes pride in having the longest wheelbase in its class (C-D car category), and features lovely two-tone leather seats with power seats available for both front seats and an 8-way programmable power seat for the driver.

Also groundbreaking is its capacitor-based energy-regeneration technology called the i-ELOOP – that stores energy collected from vehicle braking and deceleration, and redeploys the stored electricity to power multiple electrical devices in the car… thereby allowing the engine to channel most of its power to the car’s wheels. Together with its intelligent i-STOP engine idling system, it greatly increases the Mazda6’s overall fuel mileage.

Furthermore, the Mazda6’s SKYACTIV chassis and body is larger yet lighter than its predecessor, incorporating more ultra-high-tensile steel to achieve 45% more torsional rigidity and a low weight of 1,360kg. And thanks to its very sexy, streamlined profile, extended front tire deflectors and new engine floor cover, it has now achieved even better aerodynamic efficiency than ever—translating into high-speed stability and fuel economy.

Finally, Berjaya Auto Philippines—now the exclusive distributor of Mazda vehicles and parts in the country—CEO Mr. Steven Tan explained, “The new Mazda6 signifies a fresh direction for Mazda in the Philippines. We are rebuilding the foundation to bring cars, SUV’s and trucks to our customers… that are exhilarating to drive, beautiful to look at, comfortable, safe, of high quality, and above all… incredibly fuel efficient. The new Mazda6 and CX-5 are leading the path with SKYACTIV technology.”
