Mercedes-Benz passes [crash] tests with flying colors
MANILA, Philippines - Three new model series from Mercedes-Benz have aced the safety tests of the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) – an organization that provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe.
One of the models garnering five stars for outstanding occupant protection is the new C-Class Coupé-now available locally. The new coupe’s results stated that, “Mercedes-Benz showed that a similar level of protection would be provided for occupants of different sizes and those sat in different positions” and that “the system would work over a broad range of speeds and impact severities.”
“The Euro NCAP awards are a striking recognition of the safety level of our vehicles, and we’re very happy about them,” stated Ulrich Mellinghoff, Head of Mercedes Safety Development. “But the standardized crash tests cover only a small part of the real course of events leading up to and during road accidents. For this reason Mercedes-Benz designs all model series employing some 40 different accident constellations, most of which we define based on the experience of our in-house accident research. Additionally, focusing on anticipatory systems and accident avoidance we equip our vehicles with systems which are not even taken into account in the rating.”
In addition to the five star ratings, other assistance systems and safety innovations of Mercedes-Benz which can help avoid an accident or reduce its severity have won the distinction. Mercedes-Benz received several Euro NCAP Advanced awards for the PRE-SAFE®, which becomes active in critical situations and uses the time before a possible accident to initiate preventive measures, and ATTENTION ASSIST – the drowsiness detection system.
The independent European safety association Euro NCAP presents these prizes for systems with “scientifically proven safety benefits” which are not taken into account in the current evaluation system. The PRE-SAFE® Brake is also recognized. This becomes active in the event of a rear-end crash threat. The system will warn the driver and, if the driver fails to react, will reduce the severity of the impact through autonomous braking.
