The Situation Down South

MANILA, Philippines - Today officially marks the beginning of Holy Week. And if you are anything like the several other million locals that join the mass exodus out of the city, you will know all about the dangers, frustrations and hassles that are lurking on our roads. As congestion increases so do tempers. And statistically speaking, the chances of mishaps are greatly amplified. From fender benders to mechanical problems, dehydration to serious medical emergencies, its a time of year when the term road toll takes on a whole new meaning. Thankfully, not everyone will be taking a break.

The folks down in the south have stepped up their roadside assistance efforts, thanks again to their tie up with law enforcement agencies like the PNP, MMDA, the AFP, as well as LGUs and NGOs, the AAP and Lifeline Ambulance services, and of course their long term corporate sponsor, Petron, in what is becoming a well known campaign called Lakbay Alalay.

Designed to help motorists cope with the increased demand placed on their vehicles and their patience, the Lakbay Alalay team will be stationed at Nichols, C-5 southbound and Sucat northbound from 12pm until 9pm today. The team will also man the same stations from 6am-9pm every day until Sunday, and then 6am until noon on Monday April 25. The Lakbay stations will provide drinking and radiator water, towing and ambulance services and latrine facilities.

The usual Skyway and highway patrol units will be on full force as will the crew from Lifeline ambulance, who already provide free emergency care and transportation for all motorists plying the toll road.

Despite the fact that a total of 8 tow truck will be on standby, motorists are still advised and encouraged to take extra precautions during this period and carefully examine their cars for excessive tire wear, fluids, battery life and perform the usual preventative maintenance procedures that should be carried out before each and every lengthy road trip.

Skyway O&M would also like to remind motorists that newly approved toll rates will take effect at 12:01am, April 25, which sees the current rates adjusted to 44 pesos for Merville and Bicutan, 75 pesos to Sucat and 106 pesos to Alabang, while Skyway rates will be adjusted to 65 pesos for Bicutan exit, 106 for Sucat and 147 pesos for Alabang.

The holiday season is a time for being together with families, friends and of course to practice our religious beliefs. Don’t end up a statistic this easter. Buckle up and be safe.
