"When will they ever learn...?"
April 4, 2007 | 12:00am
Those are lyrics from a big hit by the very famous folk music group known as the Brothers Four during the sixties, titled "Where have all the flowers gone…?
And after all the big accidents involving the infamous MMDA "U-Turn Slots" that have cement barriers that are barely seen at night, I would like to dedicate that song to those from the MMDA who are managing the metro’s traffic engineering.
The basic problem is that a lot of these traffic engineering structures, mostly being experimental in nature, do not come complete with the basic safety requirements, like being visible at night – lighted or painted with luminous paint that glows in the dark.
One of our viewers, Mr. Tomas Tuazon wrote in to say that he wouldn’t mind if MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando would paint the "U-Turn" barriers with "pink" as his "traffic cages" are, as long as the MMDA would exert the effort to make them visible. Never mind the atrocious color as long as they would be easy to see at night, which would help reduce the many accidents that they cause, a number of which have been fatal to some motorists.
If you go around the Metro at night you would notice that a lot of these unsafe barely visible traffic engineering structures abound. The leadership of the MMDA should attend an international seminar on the proper use of these traffic engineering structures and their attendant safety signs. They are all a mess in Metro Manila. Our traffic structures and safety signs have been observed to come in all sizes, shapes and colors that do not conform at all to accepted international standards. Most of them are either unsafe or non-existent – and they kill people.
"When will they ever learn…?"
Three new models have been added to the present awesome line-up of vehicles that Hyundai now has in the country with its formal launch held last Thursday, March 29 as the 2007 Manila International Auto Show also officially opened its exhibit doors at the World Trade Center.
Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI), exclusive distributor of Hyundai vehicles in the Philippines, simultaneously launched the Hyundai all-new Elantra, the Hyundai Coupe and the Hyundai Veracruz.
"As a fulfillment of Hyundai’s relentless efforts in bringing meaningful innovations to a broader community and eventually touching more lives in a wider spectrum, Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI) once again gears up for more innovations designed to let you drive your way to the future made brighter with infinite possibilities," was how Ms. Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo, EVP and COO of HARI expressed her confidence that these new models, which widen Hyundai’s line-up of world-class automobile models in the country and will further advance its thriving position in the local auto industry.
The all-new 2007 Hyundai Elantra, which has been revamped from headlight to taillight comes with a 1.6 liter CRDi engine rated at an estimated 115 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 26 kg-m of torque at a range of from 1,900 to 2,750 rpm.
The 2007 Hyundai Coupe is bruited to have segment-leading safety technologies with both active and passive safety features. All Coupe models feature standard 4-channel ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution to optimize brake performance under the most adverse driving conditions. It also has a strong "unibody" construction, along with front and rear crumple zones, body-side reinforcement and a set of 5-mph energy-absorbing bumpers.
As for Hyundai’s new SUV offering, the Veracruz, the local auto industry’s most dynamic top lady executive, Fe Agudo, HARI’s executive vice president and chief operating officer and "lucky charm" confidently describes it, "Veracruz is ripe for picking in this developing segment. Hyundai recognized that the needs and desires of traditional SUV buyers weren’t being satisfied in a manner that is elegant and ingenious. By addressing this concern, Hyundai was able to design a spacious crossover that delivers both refined style and first class performance."
The HARI dealerships and showrooms are located nationwide and you can see all these new models up close and with a test drive to boot in all of them. Congratulations to Hyundai for its successful launch of these remarkable world-class vehicles.

The local auto industry once again rises up to meet the challenge to support an advocacy to promote road safety by educating the youth to become safe and responsible road users.
SPMJ, or the Society of Philippine Motoring Journalists is again putting up a "golf for a cause" tournament on April 25, this time at the Sta. Elena Golf and Country Club.
Alphabetically arranged the following automobile manufacturers and distributors have confirmed their support for the advocacy through their participation in the fun golf tournament that is now on its 3rd year of running; BMW, Cats Motors (Daimler-Chrysler), Ford Group Philippines, Honda Cars Philippines, Isuzu Philippines, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines, Motor Image Pilipinas (Subaru), Nissan Motors Philippines and Viking Cars (Volvo).
It was through the 1st and 2nd staging of this golf tournament that SPMJ was able to raise funds for the design and development of "Teaching Modules" for teachers and students on road safety. These are presently being used in the "Early Warning" seminars that are being conducted free to all interested schools to make their students safe and responsible road users.
Funds that would be raised from this year’s tournament would be used to produce audio-visuals of some of the vital parts of the seminar to make it more effective and interesting for both the students and teachers.
Toyota Motor Philippines has won the championship twice and is aiming for a tri-peat to be able to take home the "Championship Cup" permanently.
Schools that may be interested to have the free "Early Warning" road safety seminars conducted for their teachers and students only have to contact the Society of Philippine Motoring Journalists through their e-mail address which is at [email protected].
Happy Motoring!!!
