Suzuki’s Lucky (XL) 7

- Dong Magsajo -
In the ever-changing landscape of the Philippine automotive industry, several factors come into play to ensure the growth of the industry as a whole. The latest and most important industry-related development is of course the passing of RA 9224 — or what is more popularly known as the new vehiclular taxation system — into law. The most significant effect of the passing of RA 9224 is the sudden surge in the number of makes and models that have made it to Philippine roads (see realted story on D-1). A perfect example of this is the recent launch of the Suzuki Grand Vitara XL_7, the latest in the line of compact vehicles brought to us by Suzuki.

Those in search of a mini-SUV that can comfortably fit more than just the prescribed five persons are in luck — this could be the vehicle you’ve been waiting for. During the official launch of the Grand Vitara XL_7 held recently at the Westin Philippine Plaza, several motoring journalists and Suzuki dealers were given the chance to see Suzuki’s latest baby up close. What we realized then was that although the Grand Vitara XL_7 is a "younger" sibling of the Suzuki Grand Vitara, it’s definitely bigger and roomier that its "older" brother.

The aptly-named XL_7 is crafted in a manner that makes it perfect for just about any type of extra-large need. With its extra two-seater third row, the XL_7 can comfortably fit up to seven passengers. Both the second and the third row of seats are multi-adjustable, making it extra versatile in many ways. The XL_7’s wider doors (compared to the Grand Vitara, at least) and various storage areas add to the vehicle’s already impressive versatility. The XL_7’s cabin is also built in such a way that its passengers can maximize the space it provides inside. Standard in the Grand Vitara XL_7 is an overhead console, front cupholders, an accessory socket, a front door pocket, a passenger’s side front under-seat tray, cupholders in the center console, seatback pockets, rear door pockets, rear cupholders, an accessory socket in the luggage compartment and an underfloor storage compartment in the rear area of the vehicle. Dual airconditioners with a micron filtration system also ensure comfortable driving and riding pleasure for all passengers.

Beneath the hood of the XL_7 is a 2.7L, V6, double overhead cam, 24-valve gasoline engine with Direct Ignition System and electronically-controlled 5-speed automatic transmission that can unleash up to 180 horses at 6,000 rpm. We’ve yet to actually drive a test model but the engineers at Suzuki swear by its smooth driving experience and high fuel efficiency. The Grand Vitara XL_7 is also equipped with a shift-on-the-fly mechanism that allows its driver to instanly engage its 4-wheel drive system whenever it is required. We’re told that the XL_7 is also equipped with a cruise control system, making it ideal for long, out-of-town drives.

We asked Suzuki Philippines, Incorporated’s advertising manager Paula Popple if the introduction of the Grand Vitara XL_7 marks the exit of the popular Grand Vitara line and we’re happy to report that her answer was a resounding "no". This means that with the entry of the Grand Vitara XL_7 and the continued availability of the Grand Vitara, coupled with the strong showing of the absolutely adorable Jimny 4X4, Suzuki is taking another solid step at providing the Filipino motorist with more and better options — a sure sign of growth that speaks well of the state of the local automotive industry.
