DTI pushes for creation of more FabLabs to encourage innovation, spur growth of MSMEs

Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is urging businesses and educational institutions to set up Fabrication Laboratories (FabLabs) to encourage innovation and promote the growth of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

In a statement, Trade Assistant Secretary Ceferino Rodolfo said the DTI is promoting the creation of more FabLabs to help MSMEs become more competitive.

“The FabLab helps develop the local economy by providing better and more competitive products. It enhances the local MSME ecosystem, encourages startups, and develops entrepreneurs who create more jobs. Innovation and creativity are key to ensure that our MSMEs are at par with global market demands,” Rodolfo said.

A FabLab is a facility that allows local manufacturers to make prototypes or create scale models, illustrate graphic designs and produce goods in large quantities, among others.

The FabLab concept began in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to help communities translate their design ideas into physical forms with the help of technology.

The Philippines’ first FabLab facility, which is located in Bohol Island State University in Tagbilaran City, was put up with funding from the university, the DTI, Department of Science and Technology and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The facility has various equipment which can be used to help MSMEs in their production of goods.

In particular, it has facilities for prototyping and limited production applications such as wood working, molding, packaging for the processed food sector and the creation of prosthesis, and circuit board.

The facility is operating under the mentorship and guidance of Keio University, one of Japan’s most prestigious universities.

The growth of MSMEs is being pushed by the DTI as the sector is considered a major contributor to the country’s economic growth.

MSMEs account for the bulk of the country’s total registered businesses.
