Empowering masons through skills upgrading

-

Forty-three-year old Rodante Andres from Capiz, Iloilo was recognized recently by leading cement company Holcim Philippines Inc. as the Most Outstanding Mason in the country through the Holcim ‘galing Mason Award.

The Holcim ‘galing Mason Award pays tribute to the country’s hardworking masons who strive to improve their knowledge and skills; show pride and dedication in their work; and who are responsible members of their family and community.

Andres is employed as a general mason in his hometown’s local government unit. Masonry is what puts his five children through school and provided for food on the table. With his masonry skills, Andres volunteers in the repair of school buildings in his community.

Ten nominees from participating regions in the country competed for the Holcim ‘galing Mason ‘Most Outstanding Mason’ title. The nationwide competition started April last year.

Andres says this to encourage his fellow masons, “We should take advantage of opportunity that comes our way; and, we should not stop upgrading our skills through trainings. Continuous learning and dedication to our work are key to being empowered, feeling proud of and dignified about our work.”

The Holcim ‘galing Mason Award is part of the Holcim ‘galing Mason Program, one of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) Flagship Programs. It is a seven-day intensive training course which teaches masonry skills. Masons also learn the basics of cement properties, the correct use of masonry tools and equipment, bonds and joints, carpentry, trade mathematics and safety in the workplace.

Holcim conducts the ‘galing Mason skills trainings across the country every year. The training curriculum used in the training was validated by Holcim in partnership with the state-run Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA), and the Association of Construction, and Informal Workers (ACIW). Those who undergo training and pass the skills assessment are issued a national skills trade certificate by TESDA which can boost their employability.

Holcim Philippines’ chief operating officer Ian Thackwray says, “Corporate Social Responsibility for Holcim is more than the number of projects undertaken but an important and integral element of our business. Sustainability programs focusing on infrastructure, livelihood and education are implemented in partnership with the community, which encourage them to be proactive in finding solutions and embracing opportunities.”
