Why Philippines IR needs to think beyond our borders
Investor relations has never been more global.
Capital moves across borders. Investors compare companies across markets. Global funds evaluate Philippine companies alongside regional and international peers. Expectations around governance, transparency, sustainability and risk are increasingly global.
In this environment, investor relations cannot afford to think only within the boundaries of one market.
This is why the Shareholders’ Association of the Philippines IR Circle (SharePHIL IR Circle) believes that the future of Philippine investor relations must be globally connected.
Thinking beyond our borders is not about becoming less Filipino. It is about becoming more globally relevant.
It is about ensuring that Philippine IR practitioners understand what is happening beyond our market, engage with peers around the world and bring those insights back to strengthen our profession and capital market.
The world investors see is already global
For investors, there are no artificial boundaries between markets.
A global investor looking at a Philippine company may also be looking at companies in Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Australia or the United States.
The question is no longer simply: Are we doing well compared with other Philippine companies? Increasingly, it is: How do we compare globally?
That changes the conversation for investor relations.
The quality of disclosure, the credibility of the corporate narrative, the ability of management to articulate strategy and the way companies communicate risk, sustainability and long-term value all matter. So does the quality of engagement between companies and investors.
If investor expectations are becoming global, the IR profession must evolve accordingly.
Beyond best practices: building global perspective
SharePHIL IR Circle sees international engagement as an important part of that evolution.
Our objective is not to establish partnerships or accumulate international affiliations. It is to build bridges.
Bridges between Philippine IR practitioners and counterparts in other markets; bridges that facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences, create opportunities for education and professional development, encourage research and thought leadership and allow Philippine IR to participate actively in the global conversation.
There is tremendous value in learning how other markets approach investor engagement, storytelling, digital IR, sustainability, governance and changing investor expectations.
But global connection should not mean blindly copying what others do.
The Philippines has something to contribute
There is an important second dimension to globalization: We should not always think of the Philippines as the market that needs to learn from everyone else.
We also have stories worth sharing.
Philippine companies operate in a unique environment. Our capital market, investors and companies navigate challenges that may differ from those in larger and more mature markets.
Our IR practitioners have developed their own ways of communicating with stakeholders and navigating uncertainty.
Those experiences contain lessons, innovations and perspectives that can enrich the global IR conversation.
That is why the goal is not simply to bring global IR practices into the Philippines.
It is to create a two-way exchange.
We want Philippine IR professionals to learn from the world — and for the world to learn from the Philippines.
From observers to participants
SharePHIL IR Circle seeks to help create a community where practitioners can participate confidently in the international IR ecosystem.
We want our practitioners to sit at the same table with colleagues from Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, Europe, the United States and other markets — not simply as observers, but as peers.
That distinction matters.
There is a difference between attending an international conference and building an international professional network; between listening to global thought leaders and becoming part of the conversation and between adopting international standards and contributing to how the profession evolves.
SharePHIL IR Circle wants Philippine IR to move toward the latter.
Why this matters beyond IR
Ultimately, this initiative is not just about making IR practitioners better. It is about strengthening the Philippine capital market.
Better investor relations can lead to better dialogue; better dialogue can build understanding and understanding can strengthen trust, which is fundamental to a functioning capital market.
Clearer, more credible communication helps investors understand strategy, performance, risks and opportunities. Meaningful engagement gives companies better market feedback, while stronger professional standards benefit the entire ecosystem.
Raising the quality of Philippine IR is therefore more than a professional development agenda.
It is part of building a more credible, connected and competitive Philippine capital market.
The future of IR will not be defined by geography
The profession is changing rapidly. Technology is changing how information reaches investors. Artificial intelligence is changing how information is processed and analyzed. Sustainability is reshaping the conversation around long-term value, while the distinction between financial communication, corporate reputation and strategic narrative is increasingly blurred.
These developments are global, and our response must be global as well.
For SharePHIL IR Circle, stronger relationships with IR organizations and professional communities around the world help prepare our community for that future.
But partnerships are only the beginning. The real measure of success is what those connections create: more knowledge, collaboration, opportunities, global exposure, research and thought leadership and a stronger voice for Philippine investor relations.
Building bridges, not borders
We should be proud of how far Philippine IR has come, while remaining ambitious about where it can go.
Thinking beyond our borders does not mean losing sight of the Philippine market.
It means recognizing that our market exists within a larger global capital ecosystem, challenging ourselves to benchmark against the best, opening ourselves to ideas from other markets while contributing our own experiences and creating IR practitioners who are confident participants in the global community.
The world is already connected. Capital, investors and information are already connected. Our IR community should be connected.
That is the vision behind SharePHIL IR Circle’s growing global linkages.
Not partnerships for partnerships’ sake, but bridges that create knowledge, opportunity and collaboration — helping bring world-class investor relations to the Philippines while bringing Philippine IR to the world.
Thinking beyond our borders means opening doors, sharing knowledge, raising standards and building a stronger professional community. Philippine IR can be proudly local and globally connected.
We should be both.
Let us build the bridges.
