MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Insurers and Reinsurers Association (PIRA), which groups 72 non-life insurance companies, conducted a two-day learning session for 26 professors from eight universities. The Insurance Institute for Asia and the Pacific (IIAP), the leader in insurance education in the country, assisted in making the seminar possible. Present in the training were representatives from Adamson University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, De La Salle University-Taft, New Era University, Trinity University of Asia, Technological Institute of the Philippines-QC, and St. Scholastica’s College. A representative of a national organization of finance professors, the Finance Educators Association, also participated in the training. PIRA chairman Emmanuel Que said the professors were encouraged to discuss insurance in their classes and even encourage their students to pursue insurance as a career. The Philippines experiences an average 20 typhoons every year, and fire and motor vehicle accidents happen almost daily. “Yet the people’s insurance consciousness continues to be very low,” Que said. PIRA will be visiting campuses in Cebu and Vigan.
