BPI opens search for outstanding OFW kids

- The Philippine Star

Manila, Philippines -  The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has opened nominations for the 2012 Search for Ten Outstanding Expat Pinoy Children to all schools nationwide.

The search is an annual initiative in recognition of children of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who have shown exceptional achievements in academics and non-academic fields.

Each year, BPI fetes 10 students from across the nation for showcasing exemplary accomplishments across various categories such as Ibang Klaseng Talino, Ibang Klaseng Community Leader, Ibang Klaseng Entrepreneur, and Ibang Klaseng Artist/Athlete.

Running on its sixth year, the search aims to instill values of excellence and nationalism among students despite the distance that they have with their parents.

Through the search, BPI aims to inspire all OFW children, including past winners, to set an example for other children of Expat Pinoy families to excel not only in academics and their chosen fields but to also be part of the growth and development of the nation.

Applicants who are qualified to join based on the search’s guidelines must submit an essay, either in English or Filipino, answering the following topic: “Overseas migration has its gains and pains. As the daughter/son of an OFW, how can you help optimize the economic gains of your parent’s employment overseas and minimize the social risks that your family faces due to distance and years of separation?” The essay must be typewritten, double-spaced, using Arial font 12 pts., and must contain at least 1,000 words but not more than 1,200 words. This nationwide search is open to college students not more than 21 years old, with no failing grade and with a parent currently holding a work contract abroad.

Seven students will be awarded with the Ibang Klaseng Talino award and three students will be given the Ibang Klaseng Community Leader, Ibang Klaseng Entrepreneur, and Ibang Klaseng Artist/Athlete awards.

Application period is until Aug. 15, 2012.
