Smart facilitates money transfers from Canada

MANILA, Philippines - Members of the Vancouver City Savings Credit Union (Vancity) can quickly and inexpensively send money to their loved ones in the Philippines through Smart Communications Inc. (Smart).

Vancity, the largest credit union in Canada, introduced a remittance program via Smart Money that will allow members in British Columbia to send for free as much as P40,000 (approximately C$950) until the end of January this year.

During the promotional period of February to March 31, Vancity members may also send money back home to the Philippines for only C$3 per transaction. Regular rates apply after said date.

To avail of the low-cost offer, Vancity members simply need to go into a Vancity branch to quickly remit funds to their family or friends in the Philippines.  The sender needs to know the recipient’s Smart mobile phone number to ensure that the correct person receives the funds.

The beneficiary then receives a free SMS notification within minutes of the transfer. Smart subscribers that have a Smart Money account linked to their mobile number can then access the sent funds with just a few clicks on their cellphone.

They can use these funds to enjoy the benefits of peer-to-peer fund transfers, airtime reloading, bills payment, withdrawals from thousands of ATMs here and abroad, and purchases from millions of stores all over the world and online.

For Smart mobile subscribers that have yet to activate the Smart Money feature of their cellphone, they can simply proceed to any Smart Store anywhere in the country to apply for and receive their own card and activate and link their Smart Money account. Smart Money is issued in the Philippines by BDO Universal Bank.
