Union Bank among Asia’s best

The Union Bank of the Philippines (Union Bank) is ranked as one of Asia’s best companies in Euromoney’s Asian company ranking featured in the December 2002 issue. Euromoney, published in London by Euromoney Institutional Investor PLC., is considered to be the leading journal of the world’s capital and money markets.

The Euromoney ranking is based on a survey of market analysts at major banks and research institutes in Asia. The analysis nominated the top three companies in each of the countries or sectors they covered based on market strength, profitability, growth potential and quality of management and earnings.

UnionBank is ranked among the elite Asian companies in four categories.

In the Asian Banking/Finance category, UnionBank ranked seventh in a field of 11 Asian banks, the lone Philippine bank that made it top in this category. The other Asian banks mentioned are: 1. ICICI Bank (India); 2. Thai Farmers Bank (Thailand), HDCF Bank (India), Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corp. (Hong Kong), 5. HDCF (India), 6. Maybank (Malaysia), 7. Public Bank (Malaysia), State Bank of India (India), 10. Kookmin Bank (Korea), and 11. United Overseas Bank (Singapore).

In the Asian Best Small Company category, UnionBank ranked third among 10 companies. The others are: 1. Jollibee Foods Corp. (Philippines), 2. Aboitiz Equity Ventures (Philippines), 3. Gemtek (Taiwan), 5. Bank NISP (Indonesia), 6. Dynaplast (Indonesia), Techtronic (Hong Kong), 8. Café De Coral (Hong Kong), Eicher Motors (India), and Transmile (Malaysia).

In the Country category, UnionBank ranked third in the Philippines. The other companies mentioned are: 1. SM Prime Holdings, 2. Jollibee Foods Corp. and 3. JG Summit (tie with Union Bank).

In Asia’s Best Website category, UnionBank ranked eighth in a field of 12 Asian companies. The others are: 1. Infosys (India), 2. ICICI Bank (India), 3. Taiwan Semiconductor (Taiwan), 4. Wipro (India), 5. Sun Hung Kai Properties (Hong Kong), United Microelectronics (Taiwan), 7. PLDT (Philippines, 8. China Mobile (Hong Kong), 10. Siam Cement (Thailand), SK Telecom (Korea), and ST Engineering (Singapore).
