Concepcion-Carrier joins DENR’s Chiller Energy Efficiency Project

MANILA, Philippines - Cooling solutions provider Concepcion-Carrier Air Conditioning Co. (CCAC) has tied up with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)  for a program which seeks to encourage hotels and other establishments to replace chillers containing ozone-depleting substances with environment friendly units.

In a statement, CCAC said the program called Philippine Chiller Energy Efficiency Project  (PCEEP) allows commercial establishments to replace their old chillers which have ozone-depleting substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), with new ones free from such substances.

CCAC’s  Carrier Evergreen 23XRV with Foxfire is one such product that does not utilize ozone-depleting substances.

The PCEEP is a program funded by grants from the Global Environment Facility and assisted by the World Bank.

Under the program, commercial establishments which opt to replace their old chillers with those free from ozone-depleting substances are given a subsidy equivalent to 15 percent of the cost of the new chillers.

The first commercial establishment to get a subsidy amounting to P1.3 million for the replacement of its old chillers is a five-star hotel in Makati City.

Chillers are the main component of refrigeration and air cooling systems in buildings.

In the past, ozone-depleting substances such as CFCs were used in chillers.

“With this program, we are helping buildings in reducing their carbon footprint,” CCAC business solutions group director Rajan Komarasu said.

He said the company’s Carrier 23XRV provides energy savings without compromising the environment.

“Concepcion-Carrier commends the DENR for spearheading a program such as the PCEEP and we sincerely hope that other commercial establishments follow suit in our aim towards energy efficiency and saving the environment,” Komarasu added.

Formed in January 1998, CCAC is joint venture between homegrown air-conditioners, refrigerators and small appliances maker Concepcion Industries Inc. and US firm Carrier Corp. which manufactures and markets electrical appliances.

Currently, CCAC which is behind the brands Carrier, Condura and Kelvinator, holds about 35 to 40 percent of the local market.
