Pangasius fingerlings now locally produced
The partnership between Vitarich Corp. and A&L Fishpond and Hatchery has produced locally-bred fingerlings of Pangasius.
A&L started breeding Pangasius locally as early as May this year under the guidance of consultant Samruay Meenakarn-a Thai expert in fingerling production. During this period, A&L was able to successfully increase its fingerlings production consistently over the succeeding months.
Production is reported to be continuous resulting in a steady supply of Pangasius fingerlings in the market.
Vitarich aims to distribute Pangasius fingerlings, feeds, and fish products fully nationwide.
“Vitarich believes its alliance with A&L will provide a strong foundation towards a more robust local fish-farming industry,” Vitarich chairman Rogelio M. Sarmiento said.
Sarmiento believes that local production of Pangasius fingerlings will minimize, if not eliminate, the country’s dependence on Pangasius imports from other countries thereby saving millions of foreign currency expenditures. In additional, it will provide another production option to Filipino fish farmers and generate employment opportunities as well.
Globally known for the high quality of its meat, Pangasius (also known as Cream Dory) enjoys a rising demand among restaurants and hotels and has elevated itself into a billion-dollar industry worldwide. This type of fish grow fast to about a kilo each in weight within six to seven months’ time and are relatively easy to culture compared to other fish specie. Its white, tender and good-texture meat can be cooked and served in a variety of ways making it a favorite among Filipino chefs today.
