DENR leads mangrove tree planting activity in Region 12

-

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, in partnership with local government units (LGUs) in Region 12, government agencies, organizations and other stakeholders planted some 3,000 mangrove seedlings at Sitio Asnalang, Tinoto, Maasim in Sarangani province.

The event was a three-fold celebration: launching of the coastal theme of the Green Philippines program for mangrove planting ‘Buhayin at Ipaglaban! Malinis na Katubigan ng Bayan,’ 22nd anniversary of the National Clean-up Month which is celebrated every 3rd Saturday of September.

DENR regional executive director Jim O. Sampulna gave a message underscoring the importance of protecting and maintaining our mangrove resources. Mangroves are our first line of defense against tsunamis, typhoons and tidal waves. They also serve as habitat, breeding and nursery ground for marine fishes and other aquatic resources, Sampulna pointed out.

Vice Governor Steve Solon said the proper management and utilization of mangroves would alleviate the socio-economic status of the coastal communities. There is a high demand for quality fishery products both in the domestic and export market and if this will be met eventually, the economy of our fisherfolks would in a way improve their quality of life, Solon said.

“We truly appreciate the various partners who contributed a lot to make this celebration of mangrove planting and coastal clean-up in Sarangani Province an astounding success,” DENR Regional Technical Director Musa C. Saruang gratefully acknowledged the participating partners. – Benny Enriquez
