Bayer opens search for RP representatives to int’l youth events

Bayer, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has opened its search for Filipino college students who will represent the Philippines in either of company’s two international youth programs — the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE) program in Germany in November 2007 and the Eco-Minds Forum in Thailand in May 2007.

The BYEE program challenges college students aged 18-24 years from all over the country to submit and implement indi-vidual proposals for a simple but doable project in their community or school that addresses a specific environmental problem.

Twelve deserving students will be chosen to be the Philippines’ Bayer Young Environmental Envoys. To give them an overview of the Philippine environment, they will be required to participate in a live-in workshop to be held in a local venue of environmental significance.

Based on their performance and the outcome of their projects, four out of the twelve will be chosen to join their counterparts from 16 countries in a week-long, all-expense-paid study trip to Germany on Nov. 17-24, 2007.

Preceding the BYEE search is the Eco-Minds Forum which encourages the youth to think of creative and practical uses of science and technology in an interdisciplinary way in order to address the challenges of sustainable development.

Bayer is looking for three Filipino college students aged 18-24 years, with a keen interest in sustainable development, and taking up science, technology, engineering, social sciences and business courses to represent the Philippines at the 2007 Eco-Minds Forum in Thailand on May 30 – June 4.

With nine Asia Pacific countries in attendance, the forum zeroes in on current issues like access to safe drinking water, climate change, loss of biodiversity, pollution, and others – taking into account both global and local perspectives, including those from international agencies such as the United Nations.

Applicants need to submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words on the topic "A Sustainable River Basin." Official application form and entry requirements can be downloaded from www.eco-minds.com. Entries for Eco-Minds must reach Bayer Philippines, Inc. by March 31.
