Iron-fortified rice now available in Bulacan markets

-
MALOLOS, Bulacan — At least 5,000 metric tons of rice fortified with iron are now ready to be distributed in 52 major markets in Bulacan including depressed communities in the province where incidents of micro-nutrient deficiency anemia is prevalent.

National Food Authority Bulacan provincial manager Mariano Alvarez said the rice forms part of the 12,925 MT intended for Central Luzon provinces which include Bulacan. Shipments of iron-fortified rice have been unloaded in the country’s various ports since January.

In compliance with Republic Act 8976 or the Philippine Food Fortification Act of 2000, the government, through the NFA, contracted 100,000 MT of rice fortified with iron to help fight and eventually eliminate micro-nutrient deficiency anemia in the country.

Under RA 8976, the NFA is tasked to market and distribute iron-fortified rice, conduct advocacy and promotional activities for the effective implementation of the rice fortification program.

Iron-fortified rice will be available at P18 per kilogram through the food agency’s Bigasan ni Gloria sa Palengke (BGP) outlets situated inside public markets.
